Storyline
Rurouni Kenshin is about a wandering samurai who is in his past known as the "hitokiri battosai" meaning the "slayer of 1000 men." Because of a complicated and tragic past as as assasin he is followed by many who wish to defeat him for the title of the strongest.
The story takes place in the Meiji era after the civil war and change of government in Japan. Due to his past sins of killing many he vows never to kill again, but to use his sword to protect people. In this new era it is rare to see anyone with a sword/katana, so it is a surprise to Kaoru (a young woman who is in charge of her family's dojo) who meets Kenshin. Thus he begins his adventures with her and many more friends who come along the way and continues his course carrying his "reverse blade" sword/sakaba as a reformed samurai using the awesome "Hiten Mitsurugi Ryuu" sword style.
Review
Okay, this series was pretty good and entertaining in the beginning till it reached midway into episodes 40s-50s. At first the anime follows pretty closely to the manga and then changes with the addition of many side stories. The series were very good till the defeat of Shishio, one of his many eniemies, after that which is around eps 40-50 it becomes sidetracked and was not as enjoyable to watch. But it is still a good anime to watch and is humorous as well as packed with drama (at least in the beginning half, which I can't stress enough) thus rent it, but to go out and buy 95 episodes is very expensive.
NOTE: the story does not end exactly as the manga, but for those who are curious there is a OVA sequel and I am NOT talking about the 1st OVA "Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal" but there is a 2nd OVA, "Seisouhen," which shows the complete ending. The characters are very likable and the picture quality and animation is pretty good, but you can tell when they began to run out of funding for the series (but pay attention to the sword-fight sequences because it's awesome and I don't really think it gets any better than this).
The OP music and closing music is okay and you will get a variety since throughout the 95 episodes they change it quite a few times. The music used in the series is good as well as matching well with the episodes and is very fitting for the show. To understand and fully grasp Kenshin's story I personally recommend the 2 OVA versions (Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal and Seisouhen), which explains his past and future. I would give this series a 3 out 5 for I was a bit disappointed in the second half of the series, but it is an anime worth checking out.
