Otakon toppled Anime Expo's previous attendance figures to become the largest North American anime convention in 2003.

According to attendance stats posted on the convention's mailing list: a total of 17,338 people attended the 2003 Otakon convention, narrowly beating Anime Expo's 17,000 vistors, making Otakon the largest anime events in North America. A-Kon, the oldest running anime convention, ranked 3rd this year, with 7,413 visitors.
