ADV Films has announced the creation of The Anime Network, the first North American television channel dedicated exclusively to anime and anime-related content.
We have learned that planning for the new network is quite far along; it could possibly launch as soon as early 2003, though no details are currently available regarding which cable companies will carry the new channel or the geographical areas that they will serve.
According to ADV's press release: "The Anime Network(tm) model is structured around four categorized content areas: Action Zone, Sci-Fi, Comedy Incorrect, and Horror/Martial Arts. These categories are designed to include virtually the entire spectrum of quality anime, while contextualizing content for new viewers unfamiliar with specific titles."
ANN was recently able to get in contact with ADV Films marketing director Ken Wiatrek.
when asked whether or not the network would become a basic or a premium channel Wiatrek had this to say: "I don't know, but I would hope it would be basic cable. The purpose of this channel will be to expose people to programs and genres that they have not already been exposed to in the past."
We'll be following this story very closely, and will keep you updated as soon as new information is made available.
